Abstract
Coal transportation is a type of cargo carried by the Baratarahan train, operating on the Tanjung Enim Baru – Tarahan route, which is then unloaded using the RCD (Rotary Car Dump) at PT Bukit Asam (PTBA). The Tanjung Karang – Kotabumi route is the area traversed by coal transportation. Coal transportation has been increasing annually, reaching 39,828,608 tons in 2029. However, in this area, the capacity of the route is already saturated, leading to insufficient frequency of coal-loaded train journeys and the inability to meet the coal cargo targets. Based on the existing conditions, there is a need to increase the capacity of the route through phased construction of a double track. The phased construction of the double track will proceed through three stages: the addition of blocks between two stations, the development of partial double track, and the formation of a full double track. Adding blocks between two stations aims to increase the capacity of trains that can operate within that section of track, thereby expanding the overall route capacity. Meanwhile, the construction of partial double track represents a further stage, involving the building of several single-track sections with smaller route capacities, aimed at increasing the frequency and volume of coal transportation. Following the completion of partial double track construction, the area under study will eventually form a full double track. The addition of blocks between two stations increases coal transportation to 28,470,000 tons per year. Implementing partial double track increases coal transportation to 31,755,000 tons per year. Full double track achieves the target coal transportation of 39,828,608 tons per year by 2029, with 52 train journeys remaining. Based on these calculations, phased double track construction is necessary to effectively increase coal transportation capacity.
